Acute or chronic low back pain is one of the most common types of pain experienced by patients.  Chronic low back pain is defined as pain the lower back that does not resolve in 3 to 6 months. The most common causes of low back pain are herniated or bulging disc, muscular pain, osteoarthritis, spinal stenosis, scoliosis and fractures. Acute or chronic low back pain that results from these condition interferes with essential activities of dialing living such as sleeping, socializing and doing household chores; furthermore, chorminc pain impedes an individual’s ability to exercise.

Research shows that with regards to mild, chronic low back pain, alternative therapies such as massage therapy have been proven a safe and effective therapy for pain control and can potentially decrease reliance on prescription pain medication.

Massage therapy is an ancient therapy used to mobilize soft tissue. Tissue mobilization is thought to elicit a number of beneficial physiological effects which modulate pain. Massage therapy can relax the body, aid in tissue repair, improve blood flow in superficial vessels and elevate overall mood. Most recently, the use of massage therapy for chronic low back pain sufferers has shown promising results in the treatment of chronic low back pain, especially when combined with physical therapy and education.
