An important part of pain management and overall wellness is physical therapy. At the Virginia Pain & Wellness Center, physical therapy plays an integral role in the management of pain and in achieving total body wellness and is incorporated and individualized during the entire treatment protocol for each patient.

At the Virginia Pain & Wellness Center, our licensed physical therapists create customized physical therapy programs for each patient with the purpose of returning the patient back to normal human body movement patterns.

Psychical Therapy - Reston Virginia
As well as the traditional elements of physical therapy such as strength and flexibility, Virginia Pain & Wellness Center’s physical therapy program incorporates agility and proprioceptive and kinesthetic training, which enables the patient to participate at preinjury levels of activity while reducing the risk of recurrent injury through optimal biomechanical and neurophysiological function.

Our physical therapy programs are designed to progress the patient from simple activities, such as walking or jogging, to more complex activities that require refined levels of proprioceptive acuity.

Physical Therapy Q&A

What to expect at the first visit:
The first appointment is scheduled as an initial evaluation.  This typically takes between 45 minutes to an hour, and the physical therapist takes specific measurements based on the body region being evaluated.  After determining each patients’ strength, flexibility, joint mobility & muscular tension the physical therapist then forms an individualized plan of care, which includes supervised exercises to improve deficits found in the initial evaluation.
How long will Physical Therapy last?
This is a very good question.  Each person is different and each person has different healing times. The good news is that conservative treatment, such as Physical Therapy often works very well, and many patients come to physical therapy to avoid surgery, taking medications for pain, and to improve their overall quality of life.  The typical protocol for physical therapy is a minimum of 4 weeks.  This is not a random number formulated by a PT! Strength gains typically take 6-8 weeks to begin to see a lasting change.  At 4 weeks, a Physical therapist should re-evaluate the patient to see a change in the measurements and determine the best plan of care for each patient at that time based on each patients’ goals established their first visit.
What should I wear?
Physical therapy does involve exercise, so it would be best to dress appropriately with comfortable shoes and clothes that allow for movement.  If you are coming from work, which many of our patients do, bring extra clothes to change into if necessary.
What types of exercises will I be doing?
Most exercises are therapeutic in nature and do not involve excessive amounts of sweating or cardiovascular work.  Every person is different and the exercises are catered to each person’s specific areas of weakness or impaired mobility.  Exercises should be fatiguing in nature but should not lead to more pain!
