The anatomy of an Acupuncture needle

Many people shy away from acupuncture for one specific reason: a phobia of needles. But do not fear(!) as not all needles are created equal. What many people don’t realize is that the needles used by acupuncturists are nothing like those used by biomedical professionals.  Hypodermic needles (used by doctors and nurses) are stiff, thick and hollow because they are designed to pull blood out or force liquid into the body. Acupuncture needles, however, are fine, thin, and flexible, often no thicker than a human hair. They are inserted just under the skin to re-establish healthy flow of energy in the body. Most acupuncture patients are surprised to discover that when inserted, the needles produce little to no sensation and that treatments are quite relaxing. Acupuncture needles come in various lengths and gauges. However, even the thickest of acupuncture needles does not compare the thickness of a hypodermic needle. If you have a fear of needles, let your acupuncturist know. Most acupuncturists stock several needle sizes and will be more than happy to use the thinnest variety at your request.
